Obama offers storm assistance to Florida governor

(AP) ? President Barack Obama has assured Florida Gov. Rick Scott that his state will have "no unmet needs" as it responds to extreme weather and flooding from Tropical Storm Debby.

White House spokesman Jay Carney says Obama expressed his condolences for the loss of life, as well as the extensive storm damage. Carney says Obama told Scott the federal government would be in close contact with the state and stood ready to provide additional assistance if necessary.

Debby has socked Florida with high winds and heavy rain that has already led to flooding, with officials warning of more to come.

Obama called Scott from Air Force One as he flew to Atlanta for a campaign event. The president will be in Miami later Tuesday to attend two campaign fundraisers.

Teacher, 4 students held over alleged hazing

By NBC Los Angeles and news services

FONTANA, Calif. -- A Southern California high school teacher was arrested on suspicion of directing students to assault at least one other student in a classroom hazing incident, police said Sunday.

Emmanuel Delarosa, 27, along with four students were arrested Saturday after a student who said he was a victim of the hazing contacted school police, Fontana police Sgt. Robert Morris said.

Investigators alleged that Delarosa, a summer school teacher at A.B. Miller High School, knew about the hazing ? and in at least one instance directed some students to carry out the hazing to curb behavior problems in the classroom, Morris said.

Police: High school cheerleaders suspended for hazing incident in Utah

He declined to describe the nature of the hazing, citing the ongoing investigation.

At least one student suffered minor injuries, Morris said.

NBC Los Angeles reported that several students has been interviewed by?detectives.

Jail records show that an 18-year-old student arrested in the case faces charges of assault, child cruelty and attempted sodomy. Fernando Manuel Salgado was being held in lieu of $100,000 bail.

5 found duct-taped: Boston University students under investigation

The names of the other three male students were not released because they are minors. Police said they were arrested for investigation of assault and child endangerment.

Delarosa was booked for investigation of child endangerment and released on bail.

The Associated Press and NBC Los Angeles contributed to this report.

Maher To GOP: 'You Act Exactly Like 14 Year-Old Boys'

Earlier this month, 14 year-old right-wing radio host Caiden Cowger was pulled from the airwaves after he said that Obama "is making kids gay." On last night's "Real Time with Bill Maher," the comedian was mostly amused by Cowger, but had harsher words for Cowger's adult conservative counterparts.

"When 14 year old boys sound exactly like you do, and can produce radio shows and books and speeches that sound exactly like yours, maybe you should rethink the shit that's coming out of your mouth," Maher said.

He also cited Jonathan Krohn, another conservative wunderkind who appeared on the scene at age 13 when he wrote the book "Define Conservatism."

After rolling a Krohn speech, Maher chuckled, "Is there a charity or something can give to? Wedgies Without Borders?"

But while Maher can forgive kids for their hardline conservative views, he indicated that it was much harder to let adults who he feels should know better off the hook. "No wonder 14 year-old boys can do your act," he said, referring to the Republican Party and its media supporters. "You act exactly like 14 year-old boys. There's no ideology here. It's just about being a dick."

Maher used as evidence the various controversial outbursts seen during the GOP presidential primaries, as well as a recent vote by House Republicans to block replacing styrofoam with more eco-friendly cardboard in federal cafeterias.

"Take that, knowing things!" Maher said, accusing the Republicans of being willfully ignorant bullies.

"You'll notice that the left doesn't have any teen prodiges. You're not going to be able to find a 14 year-old who can do Rachel's show," referring to Rachel Maddow, one of his panelists on the episode.

"For Hannity and Rush, it's a very simple procedure," Maher said. "Step one, be a giant dick. Step two, there is no step two."

Wade?s knee may keep him out of London Games

MIAMI (AP) ? Dwyane Wade is unsure if he will be able to compete in the London Olympics.

The Miami Heat guard told The Associated Press on Friday that he will soon have his ailing left knee examined, and acknowledges that surgery might be a possibility.

Wade played through pain in this year?s playoffs, helping the Heat win the NBA Finals for the second time. Wade appeared in all 23 postseason games for Miami, averaging 22.8 points.

Wade says he isn?t sure what the exact problem is with his knee, which was drained during the second round of the playoffs. He says he wants to play in the Olympics again, like he did when the Americans won bronze at Athens in 2004 and the ?Redeem Team? took gold at Beijing in 2008.

Candida diet, whole foods, sugar-free, vegan Wellness Weekend ...

It?s our first Wellness Weekend of Summer!

It?s been a really hectic week this past week with student assignments, a computer crash, and a dental emergency (yes, my mouth is still throbbing).? So the recipe I?d intended to post yesterday will wait until the weekend. . . but we?ve still got Wellness Weekend today!

I have to admit, I wait all? year for summer and despite the fact that Toronto has already experienced record-breaking temperatures (and humidity), you will never hear me complain about the heat.? No matter what, it beats -35C (-31F) in winter! It looks like many of you are enjoying the sunshine, too, and your recipes are reflecting that. (Of course, we always welcome any recipes here, so please chime in, Antipodean readers!).

Newsy Tidbits:

  • Hannah of Bittersweet blog is giving away a copy of Nava Atlas?s newest cookbook, Wild About Greens. As I mentioned on the DDD Facebook page, I already own this gem and can?t wait to review it here (and maybe run my own little giveaway!).? In the meantime, enter for a chance to nab your own copy.
  • My Raw Almond P?t? was featured on the Live Superfoods site last week. If you haven?t tried raw?p?t? before, this is an easy recipe, and a real treat!

Do you have a blog linky event, giveaway or other event you?d like me to mention? Send me an email with the details and I?ll include as many as I can each week.

This Week?s Highlighted Recipes:

This week?s theme is ?spice!? I love spicy foods. . . and you served up quite a few of them last week!

And This Week?s Readers? Choices:

Thank you to every one of you who played along by submitting your recipes! I love seeing what you all make each week. I always look forward to seeing what you?ll come up with!

Please join us for Wellness Weekend this weekend! There are so many options for healthy foods. . . whether or not you?re vegan, remember that many salads, veggie side dishes, pasta dishes, desserts, smoothies, and more are naturally vegan and can all be included! :)

Here?s How to Participate:

The event occurs once a week, starting Thursdays at 8:00 PM my time and running until the following Monday at midnight.

  1. Simply link up a recipe you made (and posted about) that contains health-supporting ingredients (see list below). You may link up older posts from your archives as long as they contain a link to this post. Please do not link more than once to the same page from your blog.
  2. Please link the post with your recipe, NOT your blog?s home page or another event page. The post must contain a recipe.
  3. You may submit more than one recipe, but please follow the guidelines for each one individually. ONLY ONE THUMBNAIL FROM EACH BLOG POST, PLEASE. If your post contains two suitable recipes, link up once and people will still see all your fabulous recipes when they click on the linky. :)
  4. Please be sure to mention this event and include a link back to this post so that others can find all the recipes posted!
  5. Feel free to use the blog badge, above (or see the left sidebar of this page?if you need the html code, let me know and I?ll send it to you). Many thanks to Adrienne of Whole New Mom for setting up the badge code for me!

What your recipe CAN contain:

  • Any good-for-you, whole foods, especially those with antioxidant properties or ?functional foods? (ie, offering naturally medicinal or health-promoting qualities?such as garlic, coconut oil, all vegetables, fruits, herbs, etc.)?but any fresh, real food is welcome!
  • Natural sweeteners (coconut sugar, agave, brown rice syrup, maple syrup, stevia, Sucanat, rapadura, coconut nectar, yacon syrup, etc.)
  • Vegan ingredients (even if you?re not vegan, OF COURSE you can still play along! You?ll be surprised at how many foods are naturally vegan; and if not, there are many subs you can use for eggs, milk or butter?include vegan options and we?re good to go!).
  • Note that this is NOT AN ACD-ONLY EVENT. Any real food ingredients that are sugar-free and vegan are more than welcome?so use that maple syrup, those mushrooms, that nutritional yeast, miso, etc! I?m just looking for healthy, whole foods recipes. :)

What your recipe cannot contain:

  • White flour, white sugar, or any highly refined, highly processed ingredients (note that regular brown sugar is actually refined!);
  • Anything almost entirely artificial (ie, most boxed mixes, fast food, faux ?cheese,? faux ?meat,? or margarine, unnaturally colored cereals or other foods, etc.);
  • Animal products (meat, chicken, fish or seafood, or their by-products, gelatin, eggs, dairy, butter or honey).

?Hey! Why was my entry removed??

I will reluctantly remove any links that don?t comply. I apologize, but I will no longer be able to leave a comment telling you that I?ve removed a non-compliant link.

  • The most common reason entries are removed is because they don?t adhere to the guidelines: either they don?t contain a link back to this post, they contain ingredients that aren?t listed here, they link to another blog event, or they contain neither a recipe nor anything directly related to food preparation. If you render a recipe vegan-friendly by adding a vegan option to your ingredients, your post will be good to go! For older posts, you?re welcome to re-post them during the week of the event, or choose a newer recipe.
  • Another reason posts are removed is because the link leads to an advertisement or a business blog. Please do NOT link up posts that are merely referrals to a different post or the home page for another blog event.
  • I hate to have to remove links! PLEASE read the guidelines before posting!

And n0w. . . what have you been cooking up lately? Please share!

Never miss a recipe?or a comment from The Girls! Click here to subscribe to Diet, Dessert and Dogs via email. (?We love subscribers, Mum. . . almost as much as treats!?)

Offline Nuclear Plant Squeezes Energy Access In Calif.

One of California's two nuclear power plants has been closed since the discovery of a radioactive leak in late January. With summer here ? and increased energy use with it ? the state is bracing for the possibility of rolling blackouts in San Diego, Los Angeles and Orange County. L.A. Times reporter Abby Sewell talks with Melissa Block about what's being done to stave off an energy calamity.

Copyright ? 2012 National Public Radio?. For personal, noncommercial use only. See Terms of Use. For other uses, prior permission required.

MELISSA BLOCK, HOST:

One power plant in particular is on the minds of many here in Southern California. It's the San Onofre nuclear plant, roughly 60 miles south of Los Angeles. The plant was shut down back in January because of a leak that released a small amount of radioactive steam. It's been off-line ever since. And this week, nuclear regulators called what led to the leak, a significant, serious safety issue.

With San Onofre out of commission, officials are scrambling to find alternative sources of energy to keep from plunging Southern California into a summer of rolling blackouts. For more, I'm joined by Abby Sewell. She's been covering the story for the Los Angeles Times. And, Abby, let's start with the leak. I gather that tubes carrying radioactive water were vibrating excessively that led to the leak. What happened? What led up to this?

ABBY SEWELL: That's correct. Southern California Edison, the operator of the plant, had, within the last couple of years, replaced the steam generators, which are these massive pieces of equipment that have thousands of tubes carrying this radioactive water.

The steam generators were replaced in an effort to extend the life of the plant. But apparently, the tubes had been knocking against each other, as you said, and that was causing them to wear out much more quickly than expected. And this led to the leak that released a small amount of radiation.

BLOCK: How much of a health risk did that pose?

SEWELL: Officials are saying that it did not pose any health threat. But obviously, you don't want any radiation escaping. Once they discovered the leak, they did power the plant down so that no more would escape.

BLOCK: The nuclear regulators say they have not seen extensive tube failure to failure like this before. And your reporting says that the computer modeling by the manufacturer of this generator, Mitsubishi, didn't predict this.

SEWELL: Right. That was the upshot of a meeting on Monday where the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission gave their preliminary findings on the cause of the steam wire. And they say that Mitsubishi Heavy Industries, the manufacturer of the steam generators, inaccurately modeled the velocity of the flow of water and steam. And because the velocity was higher than expected, it caused the tubes to vibrate and knock against each other.

BLOCK: Well, what do they say about how difficult it will be to fix this and to get this plant back online and running?

(LAUGHTER)

SEWELL: Well, that's the big question on everyone's minds right now. And at this point, Edison has said that they expect it to remain shut down at least through the summer. But it's not really clear at this point what the ultimate solution is going to be, whether they're going to be able to repair this, whether they might have to completely replace the steam generators or whether it's possible that the plant might not operate again.

BLOCK: And how many people does this affect?

SEWELL: When the plant's running at full power, it supplies power for about 1.4 million homes in Southern California.

BLOCK: So we raise the specter of rolling blackouts. How likely is that to happen? What are you hearing?

SEWELL: Energy officials are saying that under most circumstances we should be fine for the summer. In the event that there was an extremely unusual heat wave or some issue with another power plant, we could potentially face issues.

BLOCK: And in the meantime, are rates expected to go up to cover this mess that they're having to fix?

SEWELL: Well, that's undoubtedly going to be a fight. Ratepayers are going to be paying for the cost of the replacement steam generators. Certainly there are a lot of advocacy out there who are promising to challenge any attempts to make ratepayers foot the bill for the repairs, or the replacement, if necessary, of the steam generators now.

BLOCK: And there are environmental groups who are saying this plant should never come back online, right? The nuclear plant should be shut down.

SEWELL: Absolutely. There are number of groups out there that are saying this shows that San Onofre simply isn't safe. And they're saying we should just cut our losses and keep the plant down.

BLOCK: Now, this problem we were talking about with the tube vibration, is it unique to this plant here in Southern California? Or is it something that nuclear power plant operators all over the country are now going and checking and making sure they don't have the same problem.

SEWELL: Tube vibration is not unique to this plant. What is unique is that in this case, the tubes are knocking against other tubes as opposed to against the support structures. The other thing that we haven't seen before is that eight tubes at the plant failed pressure tests. Which means that they could potentially have ruptured in an accident, which the NRC has said is the first time any plant that we've seen more than one to fail pressure testing.

BLOCK: OK, Abby Sewell, thanks so much for coming in.

SEWELL: Thanks for having me

BLOCK: Abby Sewell is a reporter with the Los Angeles Times.

Karin Kamp: Women in Space: Space for Women

This past weekend, China sent its first woman into space. When reading about Liu Yang's trip I was touched by what Mae Jemison -- the first African-American female astronaut -- had to say. She grew up during NASA's Apollo era of space travel, and as a child, was irritated by the lack of women involved who could have been role models for her.

If I had seen someone like me involved in NASA when I was a little girl, it would have given me a great big grin and made things a whole lot easier when I was starting out... It's not just that you can see yourself in that position, but also the fact that then other people understand that there is a wide range of talent to draw from.

Jemison on why including women is a no-brainer:

China has tremendous talent and resources, but if you don't bring all your best players in, you're not going to have the best opportunities to understand how things can be better, and how to make stuff happen more effectively. I'm very excited that women will be included on this flight.

Jemison served aboard the space shuttle Endeavour in September 1992 and has certainly been a role model for many young girls and women here in the United States.

But then something else struck me. America has killed the space program! And China is now following in our footsteps -- and perhaps will advance far beyond -- so where does that leave us?

Review: New MacBook Pro is revolution for eyeballs, raid on wallet

7 hrs.

I didn't think I would care much about a "Retina" display for a laptop. When I'm using my current laptop in a typical way, a?few feet from my face, I can't see the pixels anyhow.?So what would this revolutionary laptop with?pixels that are invisible to the human eye do for me? Turns out,?it bathes my eyeballs in a spa-like warmth the likes of which I haven't felt since I first stared deep into the high-res face of my first iPhone 4.

Don't call me a fanboy for that one. Just do yourself a favor and stare deep at?a Retina display on an iPhone 4 or 4S, or a competing phone with a ridiculously pixel-dense screen, like HTC's Rezound. When you're looking at the right image or picture, it feels like you can see for miles and miles, and it's relaxing. It's easier on the eyes, because your brain doesn't have to reconstruct reality from a pile of bricks. It simply?sees reality.?

And even at arm's length, like on a laptop monitor,?the difference?is clear. When I was browsing the Mac App Store on the new MacBook Pro, I pulled up iPhoto, and in the splash screen there was a mockup iPhoto?screen, and inside that screen were photos. I could see the detail in each of those tiny thumbnails, as if they were 3x5s sitting on a coffee table.

The other thing that I could tell immediately?about the new?screen is that there's far less glare. I have an anti-glare screen on my 2010 MacBook Pro, but colleagues in my office with standard screens live like vampires, shying away from sunlight, fearing reflections in their screens. When you set the new MacBook Pro next to an older model, you can see that Apple has cut down on glare drastically, and that?the visibility is simultaneously increased by newer?LCD technology that makes for better viewing at wider angles.

I'll shut up about the display now, but there's no downplaying its significance ? and the fact that it's a leading inflater of the price of the?newly redesigned MacBook Pro.

Whether you're seriously considering buying in or just curious about the new gold standard in laptops, you have to understand what's revolutionary about the MacBook Pro and why that will sooner or later become standard, at least in Apple's lineup.?Design and technological?innovations like these aren't meant to be kept at the high end. Just as unibody construction, solid-state memory and Thunderbolt interfaces have worked their way down into Apple's full MacBook line, so too will the glories that are today only found the admittedly expensive ? and hard to find ? new?flagship.

Another of these improvements can be heard in the speakers.

When my wife and I travel with the older MacBook Pro, and watch a movie on it?in a hotel room, we strain to hear dialogue. My wife has flat-out?banned the listening of music on that old laptop, too,?because it's so tinny. Well, the new next-gen MacBook Pro may be skinnier, but trust me, the sound coming out of it is a whole lot?fatter. You can really hear midrange and low-end, and when you crank the volume, the sound gets louder, rather than just peaking out in an ear-crushing way.

Under the hood, things get even more advanced. Instead of a hard drive, or even a typical "solid-state drive," where flash memory is stored in a hard-drive-shaped?enclosure, there is just a board that holds the flash memory, ranging from 256GB to 768GB. Flash memory is not cheap, especially the highest-quality kind needed for performance laptops, and that's why there's an?additional "early adopter tax" here:?Since Apple is hardwiring it?in, you have to pay for the internal memory you'll need?now, rather than wait to upgrade later, when the price inevitably?goes down. (Apple will however be offering RAM upgrades for the new MacBook Pro, according to a check of the Apple Store, and corroborated by support documentation.)

Pricey though it is, the benefit of hard-wired flash memory is exceptional performance: The laptop wakes up instantly when you open the lid, and when that lid is closed, your battery doesn't drain. There's a 7-hour battery life, says Apple, and the stand-by time is an incredible 30?days.

(While I wanted to share with you the significance of this laptop, I am not going to go into further?technical testing here. For an excellent technical review, pay a visit to our friends at Laptop, who have all the charts and graphs you'll need to know just how special this thing is.)

There are, of course, things that might not?excite you about the new MacBook Pro. It's not particularly lightweight, for instance. Weighing in at around 4.5 lbs., it's by no means heavier than the typical premium notebook, but it's not a miracle of lightness, either. In fact, because it has a similar weight and footprint to its predecessor, it's easy to forget about its remarkable thinness.

Another thing that might concern some is the lack of a DVD drive, but I am having a hard time remember the last time I even watched?a DVD, let alone burned one. For those still?interested in shiny silver disc handling, there is a $79 USB?SuperDrive, but it shouldn't be considered as a?precautionary purchase, because my guess is that most people won't need it.

"Need." Look at me. What an awful word to use when discussing this marvel.?Aside from visual artists, medical imaging technicians and mineralogists?? the sort of?professionals?for whom this kind of pixel density comes with immediate pay-off,?not to mention a tax write-off?? there's no way this baby is?a "necessity."

It is bragging right upon bragging right, envelope push upon envelope push, and most people who buy it will be doing it for the same reason they would buy a Mercedes-Benz CLS. To experience the height of quality??To fulfill a personal aesthetic hunger? To show off to friends and strangers alike? It makes no difference: The reason is certainly?not to get you to work and back.

So if you do buy this?? assuming all?other financial?obligations to society are covered, or you have more money than you could ever spend in your lifetime?? I say buy the $3,749 configuration. That maxes out the RAM at 16GB, the internal flash memory at 768GB and the processing speed at 2.7GHz.?Just don't be surprised when, a couple of years from now, you're standing in the coffee shop line?behind some little hipster who has a slim?new MacBook Air with all those specs, and that brag-worthy Retina screen,?and it only cost him $999.

(AP) ? Union Rags picked up where I'll Have Another left off ? coming from behind to catch a Bob Baffert-trained horse at the finish in a Triple Crown race.

In Saturday's Belmont Stakes, it was even a photo finish.

Union Rags rallied through an opening on the rail to edge Paynter by a neck, dealing Baffert a third loss in this year's Triple Crown series.

I'll Have Another won the Kentucky Derby and Preakness with stirring stretch drives over Baffert's Bodemeister. But the champion stunned the racing world Friday when he was scratched from the Belmont and retired due to a tendon injury, relinquishing a shot at the first Triple Crown sweep since 1978 and only the 12th ever.

His absence opened up the race for Union Rags, who finished a troubled seventh in the Derby.

A crowd of 85,811 cheered as Paynter and Union Rags battled down the stretch, and Union Rags barely caught the front-runner at the end to win by a neck.

Trained by Michael Matz, Union Rags skipped the Preakness and switched jockeys for the Belmont ? from Julien Leparoux to John Velazquez, who picked up his second Belmont victory; he won in 2007 with filly Rags to Riches.

"I have to give it to the horse. He did it all for me. He just worked so unbelievable and I was just hoping he could put that work into today's race and he did," Velazquez said. "I was very proud of him.'"

Union Rags was along the inside in the middle of the pack until it was time to make a move for the lead. Velazquez guided Union Rags to the inside of the front-running Paynter and relentlessly closed the gap and won by a neck.

The 5-2 second choice behind Dullahan, Union Rags covered the 1? miles in 2:30.42. The colt owned by Phyllis Wyeth returned $7.50, $4.20 and $3.40. Paynter paid $5.10 and $3.90. Atigun was third and paid $10.60.

"It was my dream and he made it come true," said Wyeth, wheelchair-bound as the result of a 1962 car accident in which she broke her neck. "Nobody would have gotten through on the rail other than Johnny. That was unbelievable. He just said, 'Move over, I'm coming.' He believed in the horse and Michael got him there."

Paynter and jockey Mike Smith bolted to the lead out of the gate and stayed in front under a moderate pace, with long shots Unstoppable U and Optimizer tucked behind him. Union Rags saved ground by hugging the rail all the way around, while Dullhan dropped back to ninth in the 11-horse field.

Turning for home, Union Rags was full of run but needed an opening. Velazquez had no room to swing outside, so he focused on finding a hole along the rail. It wasn't clear that the opening would materialize since Paynter continued to lead the way.

But Paynter slid off the rail enough to let Union Rags through in the final sixteenth of a mile. And then it was a charge to the finish line.

Union Rags and Paynter raced head-to-head, with both jockeys furiously whipping their horses in the shadow of the wire. Union Rags stuck a neck in front in a finish that was decided by a photo.

"He ran a great, great race, but I'm not too proud of my performance, though," said Smith, a 46-year-old Hall of Fame jockey who was aboard Bodemeister in the two earlier defeats. "I'm an old veteran, you know. They're not supposed to get through on the fence on me, and he did. I dropped the ball. My fault."

Former Indian soldier kills family, self in Calif

(AP) ? A former Indian army officer wanted in the killing of a human rights lawyer in the disputed Kashmir region shot and killed his own wife and two of their children in their California home before apparently committing suicide, authorities said.

A 17-year-old believed to be the man's son also was "barely alive" after the attack Saturday morning, Fresno County Sheriff's Deputy Chris Curtice said.

The ex-officer, Avtar Singh, had been arrested in this central California city last year after his wife said he choked her, and the Indian government sought his extradition days after that in the 1996 death of Jalil Andrabi.

But he remained free, for reasons that were not immediately clear. Andrabi's brother and lawyer blamed New Delhi, saying Singh's family would still be alive if the government had tried harder to bring him to justice.

"These lives could have been saved if a trial of Maj. Avtar Singh was conducted on time," said Andrabi's brother, Arshad. "We have lost that chance now. He was a known murderer and we are appalled that he was even shielded in the United States. It's a failure of justice at all levels."

Singh, who owned a trucking company in Selma, called police around 6:15 a.m. Saturday and told them that he had just killed four people, Curtice said. He added that a sheriff's SWAT team was called in to assist because of Singh's military background and the India charges against him.

When the SWAT team entered the home they found the bodies of Singh, a woman believed to be his wife and two children, ages 3 and 15, Curtice said. All appeared to have died from gunshot wounds.

The 17-year-old suffered severe head trauma and underwent surgery at a hospital where he remained in intensive care Saturday evening, Curtice said.

Singh, 47, was arrested by Selma police in February 2011 when his wife reported that he had choked her, Selma Police Chief Myron Dyck said shortly after that arrest. Police then discovered that he was being sought in India, but Dyck said at the time that he could not keep Singh in custody on the murder charge without a warrant from international authorities.

Several days later, India requested that the United States arrest and extradite Singh. It wasn't clear on Saturday why Singh had remained free since the request. A request for comment from the Consulate General of India in San Francisco on Saturday was not immediately returned.

Dyck didn't immediately return a call seeking comment Saturday about the 2011 arrest, and Selma police referred questions about the apparent murder-suicide to Fresno County sheriff's officials.

Selma police last had contact with Singh about two months ago when he called to complain that reporters wouldn't leave him alone because of the murder warrant, Fresno County Sheriff Margaret Mims told the Fresno Bee (http://bit.ly/KpCPEq).

Jalil Andrabi was killed at the height of protests in Indian-controlled Kashmir, where nearly a dozen rebel groups have fought security forces for independence or merger with Pakistan since 1989. More than 68,000 people, mostly civilian, have been killed in the uprising and subsequent Indian crackdown.

Andrabi disappeared in March 1996 in Kashmir's main city, Srinagar. His body was recovered 19 days later in a local river. He had been shot in the head and his eyes were gouged out.

A police investigation said Andrabi had been picked up from his home by Indian troops and killed in their custody. The probe blamed Singh and his soldiers for that killing and also accused Singh of involvement in the killings of six other Kashmiri men.

Singh had been charged in Kashmir only with Andrabi's killing. Kashmir police had sought permission from the government of India for Singh's prosecution in the six other killings. Under India's armed forces special powers act, federal permission has to be obtained before police can prosecute any army or paramilitary soldier posted in Kashmir.

No soldier has been punished for Andrabi's killing, human rights lawyers say.

Singh fled India after he was accused of killing Andrabi. Hafizullah Mir, a human rights lawyer, said he was tracked to California in 2009 with the help of the Canadian Center for International Justice, a human rights advocacy group, but that New Delhi did not pursue extradition until after his 2011 arrest.

In Selma, Singh owned and operated Jay Truck Lines. Alli Adan, a driver for the company, said he had seen Singh the night before the killings, and that had appeared to be acting normally.

"He was a nice guy," Adan told the Fresno Bee. "I couldn't believe it because I didn't think he could do something like this."
