Paramore, Evanescence Face Off In Musical March Madness' Elite Eight

Coheed and Cambria renew their MMM rivalry with Tokio Hotel, and Green Day look to defend their title. Voting is now under way!

Well, here we go. It's Elite Eight time in MTV's Musical March Madness, and it's not exactly hyperbole to call it the greatest round of eight in tournament history.

Why? Well, after voting in the Sweet 16 closed Tuesday at midnight, we bid farewell to both MMM favorites (30 Seconds to Mars and Linkin Park — you will be missed) and proverbial flies in the ointment (Semi Precious Weapons, F---ed Up, we're sad to see you go), leaving us with only the biggest and baddest bands in the land. And now, finally, they're facing each other, with a spot in the Final Four on the line.

Voting in all Elite Eight matchups is now underway, and polls close at midnight ET Thursday. Here's a look at each regional final, all of which promise to be totally epic — especially the Coheed/Tokio Hotel tilt, which might melt our servers. Let's get right to the action!

Midwest

The mighty Midwest appropriately comes down to #5 My Chemical Romance versus #7 Metallica, a matchup that seemed all but preordained from the minute the brackets were revealed. MCR have proven themselves to be the most-consistent band in MMM history, and with a win here, they'll advance to their third-straight Final Four. All that's standing in their way is Metallica, a band that's battled every step of the way — they've been taken to the wire in practically every round, surviving tough challenges from Guns N' Roses, Sum 41 and Five Finger Death Punch — and now appears to believe that no one can stop them. MCR has yet to truly be challenged in MMM 2012, but we think that trend ends here. Will My Chem continue to roll, or will Metallica's dream run continue to the Final Four? We'll find out over the next 48 hours!

West

Returning MMM champs Green Day look to move one step closer to defending their crown, as they draw upset-minded "American Idol" fave Adam Lambert in the West final. After sleepwalking through much of their Sweet 16 matchup with another "Idol-ite" (James Durbin), Green Day turned it on late and advanced. Lambert, on the other hand, has shocked pretty much everyone (except for his Glamberts, of course), and sped through each round with relative ease — his throttling of MMM faves Panic! at the Disco in the round of 16 was particularly impressive.

Can he march on to the Final Four? Or will Green Day show the heart of a true champion and advance? This one might be closer than most folks think, and, truly, it wouldn't surprise us to see Lambert pull off the upset of upsets here. Your move, Green Day fans.

East

In the history of Musical March Madness, there are no two more storied bands than Tokio Hotel and Coheed and Cambria, who continue to dominate year after year. Shoot, Coheed even won the 2010 title, outlasting My Chemical Romance in a truly epic championship game. Of course, as any Tokio Hotel fan will tell you, Coheed only got to that championship game by knocking off TH in the most hotly contested (and, some might say, dubious) Final Four battle in tournament history. They've been waiting two years to get revenge, and, well, here's their chance. Twelfth-seeded Tokio takes on #10 Coheed in the East regional final, and only one band can advance to the Final Four. Vengeance. Acrimony.

Rampant accusations of cheating. This one's been in the works for 24 months now, and it's already living up to the hype (you should see our Twitter feed). We're just going to stand back and watch in awe. It's going to be a great show.

South

After so many upsets in the early rounds of the tournament, the South was the only region where things played out according to plan, meaning that the region comes down to #1 Evanescence versus #2 Paramore, a clash of two female-fronted bands with truly fanatic fanbases. Both survived tough challenges in the round of 16 (Ev outlasted Linkin Park, and Paramore pulled away from Linkin Park), and now, both know a trip to the Final Four is within reach. Paramore have been down this path before, and came oh so close to taking the title last year. Will 2012 be the year they finally take home the MMM championship? Top-seeded Evanescence stands in their way, and they've been getting stronger with each round. Sadly, only one of these bands will move on, while the other will be forced to spend an entire year wondering what might have been. To come this close and lose? Well, that's true heartbreak. Sure to be another tightly contested battle, this one will undoubtedly come right down to the wire (the polls are already super close), and should live up to all the advance billing.

SharePoint Security Concerns Threaten Local Business | CITRUS ...

We often hear about the external threats to the security of important company information. What about the dangers within? An ignorant or careless employee can do as much damage to your business as any skilled hacker. It?s like the difference between someone breaking into your home and stealing a priceless baseball card and your child innocently taking it to school to trade with a friend. The loss is the same, but one was the result of unfortunate circumstance whereas the other resulted from lack of communication. The same is happening in companies the world over as executives neglect to impress upon their employees the importance of protecting company data, especially when that data is clients? personal information.

For example, security vendor Cryptzone?surveyed 100 SharePoint users?at a November 2011 SharePoint Saturday conference and discovered that 30% of them would risk removing company information from SharePoint, even if doing so would make the information less secure, in order to ?get their jobs done.? Given how much everyone talks about the importance of productivity, this response isn?t a huge surprise. Business leaders themselves convey to their employees that productivity trumps all, not security. Whether this is the message business leaders intend to send or not, it?s the one that many employees are receiving.

More disturbing is the fact that 45% of respondents admitted that they regularly copied sensitive or confidential information from SharePoint and saved it to their computer hard drives, USB drives or emailed it to someone else. Clearly, employees are either unclear about or unaware of their companies? policies on such matters, or their companies have no such policies for them to follow. One contributing factor to employees? ability to copy and email sensitive information is the fact that SharePoint end users too often have access to more data than they should.

So, who?s responsible for securing SharePoint? IT departments in most cases. But nearly one-fourth of those who responded to Cryptzone?s survey had no idea.

Such alarming statistics indicate that business leaders and their IT teams have their work cut out for them. Companies that don?t already have security policies established might want to consider establishing some sooner rather than later. Those that already have data security policies might want to consider making their employees aware of them and training them on how to make adhering to these policies part of their daily routines.

Another thing business leaders might want to consider is preventing anyone from copying information without first getting approval from someone else. This would reduce the likelihood of a disgruntled or newly fired employee absconding with valuable client lists or intellectual property.

Although storing data in the cloud is safer than filing documents away in a file cabinet, if company leaders don?t establish protections that limit employees? access to certain files and teach them how to adhere to established data security policies, they?re, in effect, playing with fire. These additional protections are the perfect complement to the security measures that many business leaders already take to protect their businesses from external threats.

NEW YORK (AP) ? Americans are holding onto a rosier view of the U.S. economy as they focus on the good in a flood of mixed economic news.

Gas prices are up, but the stock market is, too. Home prices are down, but so is unemployment.

"The resilience suggests that jobs remain a more important concern for consumers than gasoline prices," said Mark Vitner, an economist at Wells Fargo Securities.

Gas prices have risen almost every day this month, yet the Consumer Confidence Index for March held nearly steady at 70.2, according to the New York-based private research group The Conference Board. February's reading, revised upward to 71.6, was the highest it's been in a year.

Consumer confidence is widely watched because consumer spending accounts for 70 percent of economic activity. Confidence has been fragile since the U.S. recession began in late 2007, despite several short-lived spikes.

Now, it appears to be rebounding as Americans seem to be looking at the proverbial glass as half-full despite continued weaknesses in the economy, including rising gas prices.

The measure is still significantly below the 90 reading that indicates a healthy economy ? a level the index has not been near since the recession began in December 2007. But the current reading is a long climb from the 40 figure it hit last October, not to mention its all-time low of 25.3 in February 2009.

Confidence levels are closer to a stable economy than not, with Americans feeling more confident than they have in a long time.

Nicklas Johnson, a software engineer who has been with the same company for 14 years, said recruiters are starting to solicit him for jobs. That's making him more confident about spending a little more despite the fact that gas prices are rising and the value of his home has plummeted.

"I would be lying if I said gas prices aren't in the back of my mind," said the 36-year-old who lives in San Mateo, Calif. "But I'm very optimistic that employment is rising ... I'm more encouraged about improvements in the job market than discouraged about inflation."

Johnson is like many Americans, who are more upbeat as the job picture improves. The economy has added an average of 245,000 jobs per month from December through February. And the unemployment rate has declined to 8.3 percent, the lowest in three years.

Adding to that, the stock market has risen at a healthy pace this year, making many Americans wealthier than they have been in the past few years. In fact, the Standard & Poor's 500 index came close to a four-year high on Monday.

But there are reasons for Americans to temper their optimism. The end of last year was the best for home sales in five years, but a continued drop in home prices suggests the housing market remains weak.

The widely-watched Standard & Poor's/Case-Shiller home-price index, released Tuesday, showed that home prices fell in January for a fifth straight month in 16 of 19 major U.S. cities as modest sales increases have yet to boost prices.

And the biggest threat to consumer confidence is still gas prices. The Consumer Confidence survey of consumers, conducted from March 1 through March 15, showed shoppers' worries about inflation rose to the highest level in about a year, alongside a rise in gas prices.

The national average for gas was $3.74 a gallon at the start of March, up from $3.52 on Feb. 15. Gas prices rose 8 cents during the first two weeks of March, the period measured by the consumer survey. Since then, gas prices have risen another 8 cents to $3.90, which is less than a dime away from last year's high reached in early May. The record high of $4.11 was set in July 2008.

And there's more pain at the pump on the horizon. Gas prices typically climb in the weeks leading up to Memorial Day weekend ? the traditional kickoff of the summer driving season.

Still, many economists believe that Americans' confidence is finally recovering. Chris Christopher, senior principal economist at IHS Global Insight, expects consumer confidence to climb another 10 points by the end of the summer, as long as the pace of hiring continues its momentum.

Barring any major catastrophes in the Persian Gulf or a severe spike in civil unrest in Nigeria, he expects gas prices to peak at $4.20 per gallon around Memorial Day and then start to decline in September.

"I think there should be enough momentum to lift consumer confidence out of recession territory," he said.

Deep-sea scientists cheer Cameron's dive

James Cameron's record-setting dive to Earth's deepest spot has sparked a wave of excitement among many in the science community, who are not only heralding the new technology produced by the Hollywood veteran but lauding the renewed focus the project has put on the deep ocean.

"It's wonderful, absolutely wonderful," said Robert J. Stern, a geoscientist at the University of Texas at Dallas. He is one of several deep-sea researchers who said they'd been closely following Cameron's bid to return human observers to the Challenger Deep, a trough within the Mariana Trench more than 35,000 feet (10,700 meters) below the ocean surface.

Cameron's roundtrip earlier this week to the deepest place on Earth lasted just under seven hours. The only previous time humans visited this spot was in 1960.

News of Cameron's successful solo dive "gave me goose bumps," said Cindy Lee Van Dover, director of the marine laboratory at Duke University's Nicholas School of the Environment.

"I think it's a really good thing," said Bruce Robison, a senior scientist at the Monterey Bay Aquarium Research Institute in California. [ Infographic: James Cameron's Mariana Trench Dive ]

Opening the deep
All three scientists have spent many hours aboard some of the few deep-diving research submersibles on Earth and said they hoped Cameron's technology eventually will prove a boon to researchers wishing to collect samples and perhaps even conduct experiments in the deepest reaches of the sea, a place that until now has been off-limits to humans.

"This establishes that the technology exists to allow that to happen, so we shouldn't constrain our thinking about approaching work in that extreme habitat," Robison told OurAmazingPlanet. "This is a technological breakthrough and a huge accomplishment on Cameron's part, and I'm very pleased that he's done it; but let's hope it opens the door for more."

Cameron's team hasn't confirmed what (if any) samples the filmmaker and explorer retrieved from the Challenger Deep during his three-hour seafloor sojourn. The sub is equipped with a sampling arm, among other research tools. However, Cameron did describe a bleak view through the windows of his lime-green submersible.

For scientists, such an assessment was hardly discouraging.

"I was rooting for him to land and find strange-looking animals," Van Dover said, but she added she wasn't surprised. She said the seafloor is vast, conditions are harsh, and life is likely sparsely spread.

"Three hours is just a drop in the bucket, and with more hours I think he's going to discover cool things," Van Dover said. "How many years have we been studying the ocean? And it took until 1977 to discover hydrothermal vents." Van Dover specializes in researching the strange creatures that congregate around the seafloor vents, which spew super-heated water laced with trace chemicals that sustain the animals.

Robison, a veteran deep-sea ecologist, said that whatever does live in the trench, which is nearly a mile deeper than Mount Everest is tall, will be of great interest to scientists.

"Anything that has adapted to thrive in that habitat is going to have some really remarkable adaptations," he said. "But most of the animals in the ocean don't live on the bottom, so there's an enormous potential for discovery up off the bottom as well."

Much of the deepest ocean is unreachable via state-owned submersibles, which at this point can dive no more than 21,000 feet (6,500 m). Only Japan's Shinkai 6500 has reached such depths. The United States is refurbishing Alvin, its deepest-diving craft, to be able to reach 21,000 feet within the next five years. China's Jiaolong craft has plunged deeper than 16,400 feet (5,000 m) and is designed to dive to 23,000 feet (7,000 m).

New blood
Stern said he would love to get his hands on rock samples from the Mariana Trench ? the region is a subduction zone, an intersection of two tectonic plates where one plate is diving beneath another.

"To me the exciting thing is to see so deeply into the Earth. The rocks on the inner trench wall allow an unparalleled look into Earth's mantle," he said. "There is nowhere else on the planet where we could look so deeply into our planet's solid interior."

Even without geological samples to study, the recent landmark dive is a scientific milestone, Stern said. Not only is Cameron's submersible a completely revolutionary design, but the project has produced a less tangible, yet very beneficial effect: Cameron has galvanized public interest in the deep ocean.

"One of the problems we have as scientists is reaching the public, and he's smashed through that barrier like no scientist could," Stern said.

Both Stern and Van Dover said that engagement alone could pay huge dividends down the road.

"I wonder if a lot of young people are watching this, and if now there will be a whole bunch of kids who want to be engineers and deep-sea scientists. ? don't know if that's true, but that's what I hope," Van Dover said.

"It's one of those moments that captures the imagination," she added.
