Commentary On The State Of The Music Industry

Everywhere I go there se?ms to be s?me sophisticated discussion or debate ?bout what'? wrong w?th the music industry ?nd wh?t n?ed? t? b? d?ne to fix it. The conversation takes place ?n offices among professionals who h?v? b?en ?round long ?nough to know th?t things are ?ndeed different, and at industry conferences ?m?ng music artists who revel in n?w found optimism th?t infrastructure ?hanges and the arrival ?f the new digital/mobile entertainment era w?ll "level" the playing field and create m?r? income opportunities.

As tempting ?? it m?y be, I am not enamored w?th or preoccupied b? th? current problems that face the music industry. Issues such as declining record sales; the consolidation ?f radio stations; the constant merging ?f record labels; the lack of longevity ?n the "careers" of music artists; declining CD sales; ?r any myriad ?f issues r?g?rd?ng the illegal downloading ?f music on th? Internet. Why? Because while ?o m?n? in th? music industry (professionals ?nd artists alike) spend countless hours lamenting over things th?t th?y ?an't control, I onl? focus ?n the things that are within m? control such a? m? professional pursuits, income generating activities, and investing in profitable relationships.

Most importantly, m? business model ?? based on m? passions b?cau?? whil? I know that th? economy w?ll ?lw??? fluctuate u? or down, and industry trends w?ll turn hot and cold in th? blink ?f an eye, m? love f?r wh?t I d? i? ? constant and remains unaffected.

In 1999 I h?d th? pleasure of meeting ?nd briefly talking to Barry White ?t a party f?r the release of "Love Unlimited," h?s semi-autobiographical book on his adventures in life, love ?nd th? music
industry. When h? asked me wh?t I did for ? living, I told him I w?? a music industry consultant. Barry, wh? w?s much darker in person th?n he is on television ?nd in his videos, flashed s?m? ?f the whitest teeth ?ou ??uld ev?r imagine ?nd said, "I don't know what that is, but as long ?? ??u b?liev? in wh?t ??u do, that'? all that counts."

I went on t? enthusiastically explain to h?m wh?t I did ?? ? music business consultant, ask?ng him for advice ?nd hogging u? hi? limited time in the process. He stopped me before I ??uld r?all? dive deep ?nto it ?nd interjected ?n h?? sincere, rich baritone voice, th? advice th?t I ?till follow to this v?r? day, "Constantly re-commit ??ur??lf to what you d? and the money will follow..."

We ?ll n??d to re-commit from time to time. We all lose sight of wh?t we ??tuall? d? for ? living and th? reasons wh? w? do it, but th? long roots of true passion run deep...and ev?n wh?n th? tree ?s cut down by unfair business practices, a gluttony of superficial encounters, busted deals, ? never ending parade of fakes and flakes, unpredictable and unforseen circumstances, technological changes, ?nd rampant un-professionalism th?t plagues the industry, you endure b?c?use y?u kn?w th?t ?t the end of the day you ?r? trul? passionate about wh?t ?ou do and it all b???mes ? mere occupational hazard th?t you learn how to deal with.

While many aspiring industry professionals h?v? fashionably set their sights on the greener pastures ?f the music business, prostituting th?ir values for th? sake and pursuit of money, th? vast majority w?ll n?t obtain th? riches the? so desperately seek, nor will they b? in ?t f?r th? long haul. Why? Because the? lack vision, focus, commitment, ?nd ab?ve all else, true passion f?r what th?y d? - wh?ch brings us to the question: what's love got to d? with it? When ?t ?om?? to art, ??u would think everything, but th? sad truth is th?t th?r? ar? m?ny ?n the music industry th?t ar? more passionate ?bout self-serving interests, th?n th?? ?re ?bout music ?s an art form (unless, of course, the music we ?re speaking ?f i? th??r own).

And what ?bout all the "changes" th?t people ?r? talking ?bout ?o adamantly? History shows th?t thi? industry i? ?lw?ys changing. The industry n?ver stops changing; technologically; structurally; logistically; ?nd creatively. Adaptability i? ? requirement ?f success ?n ?v?r? industry b??aus? change. The music industry w?s predicated on change ?nd entrepreneurship.

Can w? deny the entrepreneurial spirit of Apple ?nd their convictive belief ?n iTunes? Or the unyielding belief th?t the creators ?f American Idol hav? in the?r l?ttle "talent" show? I can't, nor ?an you, because
that's wh?t ha?pen? wh?n ??u ar? passionate about your business ideas: th?y become business opportunities.

So for tho?e wh? ar? distracted by th? ?h?nge? that ?r? taking place in the industry, my free, but valuable advice t? all of ??u ?? t? focus ?n wh?t ??u love to do. Your passion i? th? intangible that will increase th? valu? ?f y?ur product or service. Your business needs and opportunities w?ll announce th?ms?lv?s ?t th? ?ppr?pr?ate time. Until then, rekindle ?our love affair with your business or art, b?caus? in th? end, love has ev?r?thing to d? with the reason ?ou d? it ?n the
first place.
