Thrillist?s JackThreads Hits 2 Million Members, Plans To Move Beyond Flash Sales

JackthreadsJackThreads, the members-only shopping club bought by men's lifestyle brand Thrillist two years ago, just hit a major milestone this morning: 2 million members. At the time of the original acquisition, JackThreads was really small, says Thrillist co-founder and CEO Ben Lerer. It only had around 100,000-150,000 members in total. But it soon grew. JackThreads hit the 1 million member mark in July 2011, and since then, the average number of orders placed per month has more than doubled, average daily sales have more than doubled, unique site visitors per month grew 143%, and mobile visits grew 163%. The company hosts flash sales with top apparel brands, but is now starting to try new things. It recently launched its own private label line collection called Goodale, which Lerer says led to the best-selling sale the site has ever hosted. It's also planning to expand beyond flash sales, and will soon allow members to search the site's inventory for specific items.

America's newest veterans are filing for disability benefits at a historic rate, claiming to be the most medically and mentally troubled generation of former troops the nation has ever seen.

A staggering 45 percent of the 1.6 million veterans from the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are now seeking compensation for injuries they say are service-related. That is more than double the estimate of 21 percent who filed such claims after the Gulf War in the early 1990s, top government officials told The Associated Press.

What's more, these new veterans are claiming eight to nine ailments on average, and the most recent ones over the last year are claiming 11 to 14. By comparison, Vietnam veterans are currently receiving compensation for fewer than four, on average, and those from World War II and Korea, just two.

It's unclear how much worse off these new veterans are than their predecessors. Many factors are driving the dramatic increase in claims ? the weak economy, more troops surviving wounds, and more awareness of problems such as concussions and PTSD. Almost one-third have been granted disability so far.

Government officials and some veterans' advocates say that veterans who might have been able to work with certain disabilities may be more inclined to seek benefits now because they lost jobs or can't find any. Aggressive outreach and advocacy efforts also have brought more veterans into the system, which must evaluate each claim to see if it is war-related. Payments range from $127 a month for a 10 percent disability to $2,769 for a full one.

As the nation commemorates the more than 6,400 troops who died in post-9/11 wars, the problems of those who survived also draw attention. These new veterans are seeking a level of help the government did not anticipate, and for which there is no special fund set aside to pay.

The Department of Veterans Affairs is mired in backlogged claims, but "our mission is to take care of whatever the population is," said Allison Hickey, the VA's undersecretary for benefits. "We want them to have what their entitlement is."

The 21 percent who filed claims in previous wars is Hickey's estimate of an average for Operation Desert Storm and Desert Shield. The VA has details only on the current disability claims being paid to veterans of each war.

The AP spent three months reviewing records and talking with doctors, government officials and former troops to take stock of the new veterans. They are different in many ways from those who fought before them.

More are from the Reserves and National Guard ? 28 percent of those filing disability claims ? rather than career military. Reserves and National Guard made up a greater percentage of troops in these wars than they did in previous ones. About 31 percent of Guard/Reserve new veterans have filed claims compared to 56 percent of career military ones.

More of the new veterans are women, accounting for 12 percent of those who have sought care through the VA. Women also served in greater numbers in these wars than in the past. Some female veterans are claiming PTSD due to military sexual trauma ? a new challenge from a disability rating standpoint, Hickey said.

The new veterans have different types of injuries than previous veterans did. That's partly because improvised bombs have been the main weapon and because body armor and improved battlefield care allowed many of them to survive wounds that in past wars proved fatal.

"They're being kept alive at unprecedented rates," said Dr. David Cifu, the VA's medical rehabilitation chief. More than 95 percent of troops wounded in Iraq and Afghanistan have survived.

Larry Bailey II is an example. After tripping a rooftop bomb in Afghanistan last June, the 26-year-old Marine remembers flying into the air, then fellow troops attending to him.

"I pretty much knew that my legs were gone. My left hand, from what I remember I still had three fingers on it," although they didn't seem right, Bailey said. "I looked a few times but then they told me to stop looking." Bailey, who is from Zion, Ill., north of Chicago, ended up a triple amputee and expects to get a hand transplant this summer.

He is still transitioning from active duty and is not yet a veteran. Just over half of Iraq and Afghanistan veterans eligible for VA care have used it so far.

Of those who have sought VA care:

?More than 1,600 of them lost a limb; many others lost fingers or toes.

?At least 156 are blind, and thousands of others have impaired vision.

?More than 177,000 have hearing loss, and more than 350,000 report tinnitus ? noise or ringing in the ears.

?Thousands are disfigured, as many as 200 of them so badly that they may need face transplants. One-quarter of battlefield injuries requiring evacuation included wounds to the face or jaw, one study found.

"The numbers are pretty staggering," said Dr. Bohdan Pomahac, a surgeon at Brigham and Women's Hospital in Boston who has done four face transplants on non-military patients and expects to start doing them soon on veterans.

Others have invisible wounds. More than 400,000 of these new veterans have been treated by the VA for a mental health problem, most commonly, PTSD.

Tens of thousands of veterans suffered traumatic brain injury, or TBI ? mostly mild concussions from bomb blasts ? and doctors don't know what's in store for them long-term. Cifu, of the VA, said that roughly 20 percent of active duty troops suffered concussions, but only one-third of them have symptoms lasting beyond a few months.

That's still a big number, and "it's very rare that someone has just a single concussion," said David Hovda, director of the UCLA Brain Injury Research Center. Suffering multiple concussions, or one soon after another, raises the risk of long-term problems. A brain injury also makes the brain more susceptible to PTSD, he said.

On a more mundane level, many new veterans have back, shoulder and knee problems, aggravated by carrying heavy packs and wearing the body armor that helped keep them alive. One recent study found that 19 percent required orthopedic surgery consultations and 4 percent needed surgery after returning from combat.

All of this adds up to more disability claims, which for years have been coming in faster than the government can handle them. The average wait to get a new one processed grows longer each month and is now about eight months ? time that a frustrated, injured veteran might spend with no income.

More than 560,000 veterans from all wars currently have claims that are backlogged ? older than 125 days.

The VA's benefits chief, Hickey, gave these reasons:

?Sheer volume. Disability claims from all veterans soared from 888,000 in 2008 to 1.3 million in 2011. Last year's included more than 230,000 new claims from Vietnam veterans and their survivors because of a change in what conditions can be considered related to Agent Orange exposure. Those complex, 50-year-old cases took more than a third of available staff, she said.

?High number of ailments per claim. When a veteran claims 11 to 14 problems, each one requires "due diligence" ? a medical evaluation and proof that it is service-related, Hickey said.

?A new mandate to handle the oldest cases first. Because these tend to be the most complex, they have monopolized staff and pushed up average processing time on new claims, she said.

?Outmoded systems. The VA is streamlining and going to electronic records, but for now, "We have 4.4 million case files sitting around 56 regional offices that we have to work with; that slows us down significantly," Hickey said.

Barry Jesinoski, executive director of Disabled American Veterans, called Hickey's efforts "commendable," but said: "The VA has a long way to go" to meet veterans' needs. Even before the surge in Agent Orange cases, VA officials "were already at a place that was unacceptable" on backlogged claims, he said.

He and VA officials agree that the economy is motivating some claims. His group helps veterans file them, and he said that sometimes when veterans come in, "We'll say, 'Is your back worse?' and they'll say, 'No, I just lost my job.'"

Jesinoski does believe these veterans have more mental problems, especially from multiple deployments.

"You just can't keep sending people into war five, six or seven times and expect that they're going to come home just fine," he said.

For taxpayers, the ordeal is just beginning. With any war, the cost of caring for veterans rises for several decades and peaks 30 to 40 years later, when diseases of aging are more common, said Harvard economist Linda Bilmes. She estimates the health care and disability costs of the recent wars at $600 billion to $900 billion.

"This is a huge number and there's no money set aside," she said. "Unless we take steps now into some kind of fund that will grow over time, it's very plausible many people will feel we can't afford these benefits we overpromised."

How would that play to these veterans, who all volunteered and now expect the government to keep its end of the bargain?

"The deal was, if you get wounded, we're going to supply this level of support," Bilmes said. Right now, "there's a lot of sympathy and a lot of people want to help. But memories are short and times change."

Memorial Cup: Oil Kings' boss Laxdal reflects on season

EDMONTON - Fresh off of his team?s charter flight home from the Memorial Cup, Derek Laxdal had a look to him that he?d lost touch with in the last few months. He was relaxed.

The Edmonton Oil Kings head coach is out of playoff mode, albeit a little sooner than he?d have liked, but he was in good spirits on Friday afternoon, finally able to take in the incredible run his team has had this season.

?You know what, we?re very proud of our kids. It was an outstanding season,? Laxdal said. The Oil Kings overachieved through the spring, surging through the Western Hockey League playoffs all the way to a Game 7, home-ice championship victory over the Portland Winterhawks. They punched a ticket to Shawinigan, Que. for the Memorial Cup, but ran out of gas at the national junior hockey championship tourney. Their 6-1 loss to the host Shawinigan Cataractes on Thursday night sent them home with a 1-3 record.

That?s the only losing record the Oil Kings were associated with this year. They went 67-22-3-4 this year in their run to the Memorial Cup, posted the best regular-season record in the WHL and won their first everything (playoff game, series, conference title and league championship) since re-joining the league in 2007. None of that was lost on Laxdal, who patrolled the executive flight centre at Edmonton?s International Airport, patting his players on their backs and making sure they were in good spirits.

?You go 67-22 and whatever it was. You ask me at the start of the season, ?Coach would you take that?? I?d say, ?Yeah, no problem,?? he said.

?You look at our organization three years ago, it was 16 wins going into 67 wins with playoffs and playing for the Memorial Cup, Western Hockey League champions, you know, what a season.?

On-ice skills aside, the Oil Kings greatest asset this season was their resiliency. Third period deficits were rarely insurmountable, highly-touted opponents didn?t intimidate and even after rolling through to the WHL final with one loss, a 2-1 Winterhawks series lead couldn?t break the Oil Kings.

?Our group has really matured in the last two years and you could see that, just the way we play and the way we carry ourselves and the way the players have developed,? Laxdal said.

?We?re going to be gone for 2 ? months now and when they come back we?ll go, ?Wow have they ever matured.? We saw it last year in our players, the Keegan Lowes, the Griffin Reinharts, the Mitch Morozes.

?We?re really looking forward to training camp in August and putting some new pieces into the puzzle. We know what it takes to win in the Western Hockey League, now we get to step back a bit and say ?What does it take to win a Memorial Cup?? and if you look at St. John, you look at London, you look at Shawinigan it?s three pretty good hockey clubs that were built for that tournament.?

While the coach wouldn?t take his eyes off of what was attainable during the team?s playoff run, he said on Friday afternoon that his team ? at an average age of 17 ? years ? was built to peak next season.

?Our goal at the start of the season was to get deep into the playoffs and winning the Western Hockey League, obviously you want to do that, but next year?s our year,? he said. ?We?ve got 20 of the 25 guys coming back and this year?s experience is only going to help us going into training camp, it will make it that much easier for these guys coming back. ?They?ve been there. Now there are no excuses for not being there (again), right? These kids coming back can take these experiences and move forward next year.?

Fukushima-exposed children and workers 'OK for now'

Most children and workers exposed to radioactive fallout from the Fukushima Dai-Ichi nuclear disaster on 11 March last year received reassuringly low doses of radiation, but some highly-exposed workers will need close monitoring for health problems in the future.

That's the main conclusion of an interim report on the health impacts of fallout from Fukushima issued yesterday in Vienna by the UN Scientific Committee on the Effects of Atomic Radiation (UNSCEAR).

"For the time being, we don't see anything of major concern," says Wolfgang Weiss, chairman of the committee of 70 scientists. "The levels of exposure are much lower than what we saw at Chernobyl."

The committee evaluated data on how much radiation was released from the stricken plant, how much has been absorbed by plant workers, and how much reached the general public ? especially children. They also looked at contamination levels among wildlife on land and in the sea.

The report reveals that children in villages with the heaviest fallout received relatively modest doses, although most exceeded the 20 millisieverts considered an acceptably safe annual cumulative dose for workers in the radiation industry.

Thyroid risk

The biggest risk faced by the children in closest proximity to the plant was accumulation of radioactive iodine in their thyroid glands, which can lead to cancer. Among those living near the site of the Chernobyl nuclear disaster there have been 6000 cases of thyroid cancer since 1986, although most have been successfully treated.

In the hotspots around Fukushima, thyroid radioactivity monitoring of 1080 children under 15 revealed that none received doses higher than 100 millisieverts, an amount 10 times smaller than the typical exposure levels of children around Chernobyl. Measurements outside the "hotspot" zones in Fukushima prefecture suggested that the maximum thyroid dose for children was around 35 millisieverts.

The committee has demanded more information and data on how the doses were assessed, and UNSCEAR should have detailed ultrasound thyroid scans on 300,000 children from the hotspots around Fukushima within the coming weeks. But Weiss says, "The data we've seen for the children is reassuring."

For some of the 20,000 workers who've been labouring to bring the four stricken reactors at Fukushima under control, the outlook is less certain.

Reassuringly, two-thirds of the workers received total radiation doses lower than 10 millisieverts. But 167 workers received doses exceeding 100 millisieverts. Of these, six received doses exceeding 250 millisieverts. "That's equivalent to 12 years of receiving a full dose that's considered acceptable within the industry," says Weiss.

Most in danger

Two workers received exceptional doses of around 680 millisieverts. "That gets towards the range where you see acute effects that can kill you," says Weiss. "At Chernobyl, 28 workers more or less died on the spot, or within a couple of days, from acute radiation syndrome."

"The levels we saw in those two workers are substantial, and we need to keep a very close watch on them," says Weiss.

The committee has also demanded more information on how worker doses and exposures have been established, and what assumptions were made in calculating them. For instance, Weiss says that in the early days of the disaster, some workers may have been exposed to high-energy neutrons as fuel melted and went critical, but there's no exposure data because their dosimeters can't detect neutrons.

For the population as a whole, Weiss says the risks from radioactive iodine have long passed, as most of it decayed away within a month of the disaster. But the potential risks from two radioactive caesium isotopes remain. Half of any amount of caesium-134 decays away within two years, for caesium-137 it is 30 years.

The committee is due to deliver its final report to the UN next May, after incorporating additional data from the Japanese authorities, US military and navy vessels exposed to fallout from Fukushima, and local surveys of sediments, fish and other marine life. Also, to assess the risks from food, the committee will analyse 130,000 samples of produce from around Fukushima gathered since the disaster by the UN Food and Agriculture Organization.

Flurry of arguments start Gupta insider-trading trial

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Former Goldman Sachs director Rajat Gupta "threw away his duties" by divulging bank secrets to hedge fund manager Raj Rajaratnam, a U.S. prosecutor said at the start of Gupta's insider-trading trial on Monday.

The defense punched back that the government had no direct evidence.

Gupta, 63, once a boldface name in business and charity circles, is the most prominent corporate executive charged in a U.S. government crackdown on insider trading in recent years. Galleon Group founder Rajaratnam, an erstwhile friend and business associate of Gupta, was convicted of insider trading a year ago and is serving an 11-year prison term.

Gesturing with his left arm toward Gupta in a Manhattan federal courtroom, prosecutor Reed Brodsky said the case "is about this man" and "how he violated his duties and abused his position as a corporate insider."

As Brodksy delivered his opening argument to the jury, Gupta stared at him, barely moving in his seat at the defense table. His wife, Anita, and their four adult daughters sat in the front row, also absorbed by the proceedings.

During his turn at the podium, Gupta's lawyer Gary Naftalis painted a very different picture of Gupta, who was born in India and attended Harvard Business School before heading to McKinsey & Co management consultancy.

Naftalis repeatedly told the jury that there was "no real, hard, direct evidence" against him despite 10 months of FBI wiretaps on Rajaratnam's phones in 2008 and 2009.

"Rajaratnam had sources all over town giving him information. He even had sources at Goldman Sachs," Naftalis told the 12-member jury, which includes a nurse, an elementary teacher, and two executives.

The trial is expected to last three to four weeks. The government will call its first witnesses on Tuesday.

One of the legal challenges for prosecutors in the trial is to prove beyond a reasonable doubt that Gupta was Rajaratnam's source for a host of secrets while serving on the boards of Goldman Sachs and Procter & Gamble between March 2007 and January 2009. They also have to prove Gupta benefited.

FALLING OUT

Naftalis argued in his 45-minute opening statement that Gupta had no reason to illegally spill corporate secrets to Rajaratnam, someone "he felt lost him a lot of money and betrayed him." The men had a falling out in 2008 and Gupta lost all $10 million of an investment with Galleon funds.

Assistant U.S. Attorney Brodsky told the jury that Gupta and Rajaratnam were invested together in a fund called Voyager Capital Partners for several years. He said while they went their separate ways "that doesn't undo what happened."

Gupta faces a possible maximum prison term of 25 years if he is convicted on the charges of securities fraud and conspiracy.

Goldman will play a key role at the trial. One of the government's core allegations is that Gupta tipped Rajaratnam to a $5 billion investment by Warren Buffett's Berkshire Hathaway Inc in Goldman during the 2008 financial crisis and Goldman's surprise fourth-quarter loss that year.

Brodsky told the jury it would hear evidence that on September 23, 2008, Gupta called Rajaratnam 16 seconds after a special Goldman board meeting approved the $5 billion investment.

Rajaratnam then ordered his traders to buy Goldman stock, prosecutors contend. The investment boost to Goldman was not made public or known to ordinary investors until after the market closed that day, Brodsky said.

"It was against the rules for Gupta or anyone else who knew to tell anyone else about it," Brodsky said in his statement.

Goldman has not been charged with any wrongdoing.

Before the jury was seated, Brodsky told Judge Jed Rakoff that the government plans to call former Goldman banker Byron Trott, a long-time Buffett confidant, and William George, a director at the investment bank since 2002, as witnesses this week.

Other witnesses who could take the stand during the trial include Goldman Chief Executive Lloyd Blankfein, who testified for the government at the Rajaratnam trial and said Gupta breached his fiduciary duty to the investment bank.

The case is USA v. Gupta, U.S. District Court for the Southern District of New York, No. 11-907.

Baku, Doha face scrutiny in 2020 bid choice

(AP) ? The field of candidates for the 2020 Summer Olympics could be reduced from five to three, with Doha and Baku in danger of missing the cut.

Tokyo, Istanbul and Madrid look certain to make the list when the International Olympic Committee executive board announces the group of finalists on Wednesday evening in Quebec City.

Whether the IOC keeps all five cities or pares the list to four or three remains the issue, a tricky choice at a time of global economic and political uncertainty.

"Risk is part of the assessment ? political risk, economic risk," IOC board member Denis Oswald said Tuesday.

Madrid is bidding for a third consecutive time, Tokyo a second time in a row and Istanbul a fifth time overall.

Doha, capital of the Gulf state of Qatar, and Baku, capital of the former Soviet republic of Azerbaijan, are back after failing to make the shortlist for the 2016 Games and face the most scrutiny again.

The cities selected Wednesday will go forward to the final phase, a 17-month race that will end with a secret vote by the full IOC in Buenos Aires in September 2013.

The 15-member executive board, headed by IOC President Jacques Rogge, will choose the finalists after examining a technical evaluation report compiled by a panel of Olympic experts.

IOC Vice President Thomas Bach called it "the most difficult decision we have ever had to take with regard to a shortlist."

The dynamics of the race changed dramatically when Rome, considered a potential 2020 favorite, pulled out of the bidding in February after the Italian government declined to provide financial guarantees at a time of economic austerity.

If there is a cut Wednesday, Baku is expected to be eliminated first. If the IOC decides to keep four cities, Doha would be safe. If it's three finalists, Doha would likely be dropped.

Baku is seen as lacking in experience in hosting international sports events and officials believe it's too soon for the city to be considered a viable contender.

Qatar is already hosting the 2022 World Cup, but faces questions over the heat, the timing and other issues for the Olympics. The IOC agreed to let Doha bid based on Qatar's proposal to hold the games from Oct. 2-18 to avoid the brutal summer heat, but officials remain concerned about the weather, conditions for athletes and potential conflicts with television and other sports events going on during that time of year.

Doha, saying it's bidding for the entire Middle East, insists it has the backing of international sports federations for its October proposal.

"We have done all that was requested from the international federations and the IOC," Qatar Olympic Committee secretary general Saoud Bin Abdulrahman Al-Thani said Tuesday. "We have communicated with them. We are confident that we fulfill all the requirements. We just have to wait for their decision."

Madrid is bidding against the backdrop of Spain's financial crisis, something the IOC said it will take into account.

Madrid bid leader Alejandro Blanco said the city would go the distance until the vote in Buenos Aires, brushing off suggestions that it could drop out as "rumors" spread by rivals. He insisted the Spanish government fully backs the project and said the games would be a catalyst for economic recovery.

"The economy is not a problem only for Madrid," Blanco said. "The crisis is global. History shows it's impossible to always be in a peak economic situation. There are always ups and downs. We are talking about 2020. Things can only go up."

Tokyo is bidding in the aftermath of last year's earthquake and tsunami disaster.

"We need something to lift up the country," said Tsunekazu Takeda, president of the Japanese Olympic Committee. "The games will help re-energize the people."

Istanbul bid official Hasan Arat insisted the Olympics is Turkey's main priority. The country is also bidding for soccer's 2020 European Championship, but the IOC has said Turkey can't do both.

"For Turkey, hosting the games has always been the ultimate prize," Arat said. "Every level of government is right behind us. ... Turkey has never been more serious about hosting the games, and we have never been more ready to host the games."

Yahoo under Levinsohn seen shifting to content, advertising

SAN FRANCISCO (Reuters) - With two of its most distracting conflicts resolved in the past week and a half, Yahoo Inc hopes its new interim chief executive can focus on the biggest challenge of all: turning the company into a digital entertainment destination that wins back the advertising dollars flowing elsewhere.

While ousted predecessors Scott Thompson and Carol Bartz were seen as technologists, Ross Levinsohn has managed Internet efforts at such mainstream media companies as CBS and Rupert Murdoch's News Corp.

Those close to Levinsohn said he is committed to building out Yahoo's own video programming and striking more syndication deals in pursuit of ads that command a higher price. In one sign that Yahoo is thinking of itself as more of a media company than a technology company, Levinsohn will continue to live in the Los Angeles area instead of decamping for the company's Silicon Valley headquarters, according to a source familiar with his plans.

"Levinsohn is a media guy, and our business model is selling display advertising," said another Yahoo insider. "His elevation makes clear we are a media company now."

Yahoo elevated Levinsohn on May 13 -- the same day it settled a dispute with Daniel Loeb, giving the activist investor three board seats. On Monday, Yahoo inked a deal to sell half of its stake in Alibaba Group back to the Chinese e-commerce giant for more than $7 billion, monetizing Yahoo's biggest asset after years of fractious talks.

Levinsohn, 48, declined interview requests but has told staffers to expect more on his strategy within weeks.

Longtime company insiders said that while Yahoo has a hard road ahead of it, the resolution of the two battles and Levinsohn's strength in advertising give the company a better chance than it had under Bartz or Thompson, with the latter resigning after Loeb revealed that he didn't have a claimed undergraduate degree in computer science.

CONTENT FOCUS

Industry executives and Yahoo investors said that Levinsohn has few viable alternatives other than reorienting Yahoo around media and advertising.

"When you have a turnaround situation, particularly an Internet turnaround situation, there are only a very few ways to solve the puzzle," said current News Corp Chief Digital Officer Jonathan Miller, who co-founded a venture capital firm with his friend Levinsohn six years ago. "In Yahoo's case, some of the slots you might think to take are already taken -- being a leader in the social space is taken, and being No. 1 in search is occupied. They aren't going to be the mobile platform."

"One of the things that is open and fits is digital media. I think it's the one (slot) that Yahoo has to occupy, and Ross has the background, the orientation and the skills to take the lead in that category."

Though generic display advertising has lost favor to search-based ads and other more interactive formats, it still generated $12.4 billion in U.S. industry revenue last year and should produce $15.4 billion in 2012, according to eMarketer analyst David Hallerman.

Yahoo's share of that has been slipping, however, as advertisers turn to Google, Facebook and others. Hallerman projected that Yahoo's display advertising share would decline to 9.1 percent this year from 10.8 percent in 2011.

Video ads are more promising. They made up only 6.3 percent of all U.S. online advertising dollars last year but are growing more than 50 percent yearly.

Therein lies the reason Levinsohn has been frantically inking new deals to show original content from ABC News and established Hollywood stars creators such as Tom Hanks and Ben Stiller. Yahoo now claims 21 of the 25 most-watched Web series, and in the first quarter eked out a 1 percent revenue increase, the first year-over-year gain since 2008.

"If you think of content creation in a line from the free user-generated stuff to the most expensive, like the Netflix content you pay for, Ross' vision is to move up as high as they can go on free and ad-supported, because scale matters," said one of Yahoo's largest shareholders, who declined to be identified because the investor does not speak publicly on holdings. "I think he's right about that."

LEVINSOHN'S PAST

Raised in suburban New Jersey, Levinson graduated from American University in Washington, D.C. and served as a young executive at media and tech properties including early search engine AltaVista and CBS SportsLine, where he was early to pick content aimed at fantasy sports league players.

Prior to his appointment at Yahoo, Levinsohn was best known as the man who brought a still-young MySpace to the attention of News Corp Chairman Rupert Murdoch, who spirited it away from the outstretched arms of rival media baron Sumner Redstone's Viacom.

Though the $580 million price was derided as exorbitant, Levinsohn soon negotiated an advertising pact with Google that guaranteed News Corp a minimum of $900 million over three years, bringing both instant profit and acclaim to Murdoch, who was heralded as the one old-school media mogul who understood new media.

But MySpace soon fell into an epic downward spiral that ended last year in a sale reportedly worth $35 million, about a third of a thousandth of what Facebook was worth when it went public Friday.

Levinsohn, for his part, was around for almost none of the MySpace collapse and gets little blame from former colleagues.

Levinsohn was strong enough at internal politics that he survived for six years amid the intrigue at Murdoch's court, but was disadvantaged because he reported to News Corp's then-Chief Operating Officer Peter Chernin while MySpace founder Chris DeWolfe spoke directly to Murdoch, who became enamored with DeWolfe and his partner Tom Anderson, coming to see them as visionaries who could do no wrong.

With Murdoch's full support, DeWolfe and his team were able to successfully resist some changes Levinsohn wanted, and as innovation at MySpace stalled Levinsohn decided to leave News Corp, joining Miller at venture firm Velocity Interactive, known later as Fuse Capital.

Levinsohn wasn't as good at early-stage investing as he had hoped to be, said a third partner from Fuse, Keyur Patel. Only a few of the companies Fuse backed have been sold, and none have gone public.

"There were very high-risk deals," Patel said. "None of those companies were a big hit."

Former underlings said Levinsohn is slow to anger and has embraced the element of News Corp culture that prizes personal loyalty above short-term performance.

Since joining Yahoo in 2010, he has overseen the acquisition of one Fuse creation, advertising technology company 5 to 1, and brought aboard his friend and co-founder there, News Corp veteran James Heckman.

He also hired another News Corp survivor, Mickie Rosen, who went on to found a price-comparison service called Tecca, which Fuse also backed.

Just days into his new role, Levinsohn told employees that the well-regarded Rosen would assume responsibility for content and business deals.

In addition, he gave Rosen control of Yahoo's fledgling effort to handle consumer transactions, which his predecessor Thompson -- a former PayPal president -- had set up on its own.

Ever the diplomat, Levinsohn disparaged neither the initiative nor Thompson, even though the latter was seen internally as a destructive force.

"Commerce is a significant opportunity for growth," Levinsohn wrote to the troops. "In order to thrive it needs to be woven throughout the Yahoo experience and close to our major traffic drivers."

HBT: Chapman arrested for speeding on suspended license

One day after officially being named the Reds? closer, Aroldis Chapman is in some hot water.

According to NBC affiliate WLTW, Chapman was arrested in Ohio early Monday morning after speeding while driving with a suspended license.

Chapman was pulled over after being clocked at 93 mph in his 2010 Mercedes S63. That probably doesn?t seem very fast to him since his average fastball checks in at 96.7 mph this season, but most normal people consider that excessive and reckless. The Cuban left-hander was arrested after the officer saw he was driving with a suspended Kentucky driver?s license. There was no mention of alcohol in the report.

Chapman was formally charged cited for speeding and driving under suspension. He was released on bond and is expected to appear in court on June 6.

The Reds haven?t issued a statement on the matter and it?s not clear if he?ll face any punishment from the team.
